“Peptide support” can appear in a dietary supplement name or description, but the phrase does not automatically mean the product contains a prescription peptide, GLP-1 receptor agonist or injectable drug.
What is a peptide?
A peptide is a chain of amino acids. The term covers many different substances in biology, foods, cosmetics and medicines. Knowing that something is called a peptide does not identify its function, dose, safety profile or regulatory category.
Product category comes first
A prescription drug has an active ingredient, approved uses, dosing instructions and prescribing information. A dietary supplement should identify itself as a supplement and list dietary ingredients in Supplement Facts. If a product is a dietary supplement, “peptide support” is positioning language unless a specific lawful dietary ingredient is disclosed.
Questions to ask
- Does the front or information panel say “dietary supplement”?
- Which exact ingredients appear in Supplement Facts?
- Is any peptide specifically named and quantified?
- Does the product imply that it contains semaglutide, tirzepatide or another prescription drug?
- Are the directions and warnings appropriate for the disclosed ingredients?
Why GLP-1 language can be confusing
GLP-1 is a peptide hormone produced in the body, while GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines are prescription drugs. A nutritional product that uses GLP-1-related wording is not therefore the hormone or the medicine. How to evaluate evidence
