How Much Iodine Is in Sea Moss? What Labels Can Tell You

Understand why sea moss iodine varies, where to find it on a label and how to add up iodine from multiple foods and supplements.

There is no single iodine amount that applies to all sea moss. Seaweed iodine can vary with species, location, water conditions, harvest and processing. A serving of gel, dried seaweed, powder, capsules or gummies may therefore provide very different amounts.

The most reliable number for a packaged product is a validated amount disclosed for that specific serving or batch—not a generic internet estimate.

Why the body needs iodine

Iodine is used to make thyroid hormones. The NIH lists a recommended dietary allowance of 150 micrograms per day for most adults, with higher needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It also lists an adult upper intake level of 1,100 micrograms per day from all sources. Individual medical advice can differ. See the NIH fact sheet.

Why sea moss numbers vary

  • Different seaweed species accumulate iodine differently.
  • Growing water and season can change mineral content.
  • Washing, soaking, heating and extraction can alter amounts.
  • Finished supplements may blend sea moss with bladderwrack, kelp or other ingredients.
  • A capsule or gummy serving may contain much less material than a food-sized seaweed portion.

Where to look on the label

Check the Supplement Facts panel for iodine in micrograms (mcg) and its % Daily Value. Then examine whether the formula also lists kelp, bladderwrack or another iodine-containing seaweed. If iodine is not disclosed, do not calculate it from the product’s appearance or the number of minerals advertised.

The FDA requires Supplement Facts to identify serving size and dietary ingredient amounts under applicable labeling rules. Review the FDA labeling guide.

Calculate total intake, not one bottle in isolation

Add iodine from multivitamins, prenatal products, kelp, sea moss, seaweed snacks and other supplements. The % Daily Value is a comparison tool, not a personal prescription. More than 100% DV is not automatically better.

Questions to ask when iodine is missing

  1. Was iodine measured in the finished product?
  2. Is there a typical or specified range per serving?
  3. Does the result apply to the current lot?
  4. Which method and unit were used?
  5. Does the formula contain other iodine-rich seaweeds?

Who should be especially careful?

People with thyroid disease, iodine sensitivity, kidney concerns or abnormal thyroid tests should seek individual advice. The same applies to those using thyroid medicine, pregnant or breastfeeding people and children. Do not use sea moss to replace thyroid testing or prescribed treatment.

Compare the current Supplement Facts for Sea Moss Capsules, Sea Moss Gummies and the Sea Moss Energy Pack. Do not assume identical iodine exposure across formats or blends.

Bottom line

Sea moss does not have one universal iodine number. Use product-specific disclosure, add up all sources and treat missing iodine information as a reason to ask questions. See the full Sea Moss Supplement Guide.
