The phrase “GLP-1” is now used for prescription medicines, compounded drugs, body biology and dietary supplements. These categories are not interchangeable.
A dietary supplement with GLP-1 in its name does not become a GLP-1 receptor agonist medicine, and it should not be expected to reproduce prescription-drug results.
Four different categories
| Category | What it means |
|---|---|
| Natural GLP-1 | A hormone released by the gut after eating |
| FDA-approved GLP-1 medicine | A prescription drug reviewed for specific uses, doses, benefits and risks |
| Compounded GLP-1 drug | A prescription preparation that is not FDA approved and may be appropriate only in limited circumstances |
| Dietary supplement | A food-regulated product containing dietary ingredients; it is not a prescription GLP-1 drug |
What prescription GLP-1 medicines do
Approved GLP-1 receptor agonists and related medicines act on defined drug targets and carry prescribing information, contraindications and adverse-effect warnings. They require appropriate medical care. Drug choice and dosing are individualized.
What “GLP-1 support” usually means on a supplement
A supplement may contain fiber, botanicals, vitamins or minerals associated with digestion, appetite awareness or metabolic wellness. The name describes positioning; it does not mean the product contains semaglutide, tirzepatide or another prescription active ingredient.
Confirm the category on the label. A legitimate dietary supplement should identify itself as such and provide Supplement Facts.
Why the distinction matters
The FDA warns that unapproved versions of GLP-1 drugs do not undergo the agency’s review for safety, effectiveness and quality before marketing. It advises patients to obtain prescription medicines through licensed professionals and pharmacies. Read FDA’s GLP-1 information.
Dietary supplements are also not preapproved by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Their labels and claims must not present them as drug substitutes.
Questions to ask about a supplement
- Does the label clearly say “dietary supplement”?
- Which ingredients and amounts appear in Supplement Facts?
- Does the product imply that it is equivalent to an injection or medicine?
- Are directions, warnings and manufacturer contact information clear?
- Could ingredients overlap or interact with medication?
If you already use a prescription medicine
Do not add an appetite or metabolic supplement without discussing the complete ingredient list with a qualified clinician or pharmacist. Do not stop, replace or change a prescribed medicine based on a supplement page.

Bottom line
Natural GLP-1, approved medicines, compounded drugs and dietary supplements are four distinct things. Use the GLP-1 Education & Supplement Guide and read GLP-1, Appetite and Supplements before comparing products.
